Carmen and I spent our last vacation night together in March 2003 in the south western part of the Dominican Republic near the Haitian border. This area of the country is mountainous and filled with rain forests and waterfalls. Our resort was located on a hill over looking the Caribbean Sea. It was the most beautiful in the evening when the skies were clear. You could see every star in the heavens. We were sleeping in a quaint thatched roof hut. To be honest, it was not what I was accustom to but, as long as Carmen was with me I was fine. Later that evening as we prepared to leave our room for dinner with our friends, Carmen suggested that we place our valuables in the room's safe. I was not ready for this unplanned and unexpected situation. I wanted to propose to Carmen on the Beach. The problem was we were very far from the beach on a large hill overlook. I had to make a decision to propose at that moment. The ring was obviously a valuable but, I couldn't put it in the safe with the rest of our items. She would have been suspicious. So, I decided to propose marriage in our room before we went to dinner. I had prepared what I wanted to say and had it translated into Spanish. I asked Carmen to set down and that I had something very important to ask her. She had no idea what I was preparing to do. I pulled the letter from my pocket and proceeded to read in Spanish.
"You are my baby, you are my heart, you are my doll, will you marry me?" I then pulled the ring box from behind my back and enjoyed watching her face light up!

She could not believe it. She kissed me, grabbed me and we fell over backwards onto the bed. She then started to cry tears of joy. We were both very happy. I'll never forget that night. I proposed to Carmen in a thatched roof hut, in a rain forest, near a beautiful Caribbean beach at night with all the stars in the night sky shinning on us. It was truly a special memory that both of us will cherish for a lifetime. I returned to Florida only a day later. It was very heart breaking to leave the woman I had just proposed marriage to, a short time before. We continued to exchange e-mails and instant messages on the computer and phone calls on the weekends. I began to plan my next visit for April when I would be attending my good friends Marc and Erica's

baby shower in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I flew into San Juan on a Friday, attended the party and flew to the Dominican Republic the following Sunday. Carmen met me at the airport and she took me to another beautiful resort for two days. It was a short visit but we enjoyed every minute we shared together. Our next step on this journey is to apply and obtain Carmen's Fiance VISA so she may enter the United States and we can plan our wedding. The Fiance VISA takes approximately 8 to 12 months to obtain. I am told that it is relatively fast when you take into consideration how difficult it has become to obtain any kind of VISA allowing entrance for a non citizen into the United States. The paper work starts in June for Carmen's Fiance VISA. I will continue to update our web site in order to keep our family and friends up to date on our story.
